Eyelash Extensions - Recommendations, Tips, Tricks & Discounts!
Updated: Dec 17, 2022
I LOVE eyelash extensions. Mostly, I feel like once you have extensions you honestly don't have to worry about the rest of your makeup. I have tried EVERYTHING from salon-based eyelash extensions, Latisse serum, Moxie (magnetic lashes), Lash Lifts and MY FAVE: do-your-own eyelash extensions (where the extensions go under your lash line. Keep reading for more details and ultimately what I recommend
With my referral codes you can get 10% off at Flutter Habit and 20% off at Lilac St. Can't decide between which? Click here to read my review of each company or use BOTH referral codes an try both, this is what I decided to do

SALON-BASED EYELASH EXTENSIONS
$$$$
My first time trying these was for my brother's wedding in Hawaii. So, I LOVED the idea that I didn't have to worry about my makeup, especially after swimming or any other "water activity." If you are anywhere near Chandler, Arizona, I cannot recommend Casey Merrell enough of Sasha Bella Spa and Lash Bar. She was fantastic when I FIRST went to her in 2012 and AGAIN when I tracked her down for my wedding in 2017. She was SO good that I reviewed her twice on Yelp! See my 5-star review below!
The disadvantage of going to an aesthetician that does lashes is they are VERY pricey. A full set can run $200-300 and then depending on your own eyelashes, you will need to return every 2-3 weeks to get them filled. I would have kept up my eyelash extensions, had it not been for the price. BEWARE of lower-priced places. I was on a clinical and a poor grad student, so I decided to get a fill at a random nail salon in Vegas and they RUINED my eyes (I'm still pissed that I never reviewed them or wrote down what the establishment was). This was in 2012 and year's later in 2017 I still couldn't get extensions done without my eyes being blood shot/irritated. When I returned to my beloved Casey after this, she reported that the lady glued my real lashes together and she had to spend extra time combing the glue out of my lashes to make sure she didn't kill my real lashes. So, if you're going to go for the lashes, DEFINITELY go to a reputable source.
LATISSE (BIMATOPROST)
$$
A good friend of mine told me about the "Hey Doctor app" where you download the app, answer some questions, do a video chat with a healthcare practitioner, pay and then a prescription for Latisse or (bimatoprost - the generic name) is sent to your pharmacy of your choice. Even when the prescription was sent, it was not covered by insurance, but I used a Good Rx coupon to pay about $75 for 2-3 months worth of the serum.
I definitely saw results and it's easy to just brush on your lashes morning and night. It actually helped some of my lashes regrow from the nail salon eyelash extension debacle (see above). But, in the end, the change was just not enough for me. My eyelashes are quite long, but they point downward, so this did not help that. NOTE: some people have reported that the skin around their eyes change with the serum. I did not have this, but I have heard multiple accounts report this

This one is probably one of your CHEAPEST options for lashes, aside from store-bought lashes. I was so ecstatic to see these and the videos looked great. Admittedly, it was a WASTE of money for me. When I bought my kit, the magnetic eyeliner was in a "pot" that you dip your brush in and apply to your eye. The consistency of it was so thick and barely spreadable, I could never get enough on my lash line to make the magnets stick. It looks like they've re-done their formula and now the eyeliner is a glide-on liner, which looks like it would be way more helpful.

LASH LIFTS
$$-$$$
Lash lifts are essentially a perm for your eyelashes to help them curl upwards. They are DEFINITLEY cheaper than salon-based eyelash extensions but still require that you return regularly. I put a range because it depends how often your lashes need you to return to complete the lash lift. I tried these for awhile and it definitely curled my lash, but ultimately I stopped going because the price was still too steep for me, considering the results did not look like extensions
DO-YOUR-OWN EYELASH EXTENSIONS
$$-$$$
These have ultimately become my favorite. I've perfected putting store-bought lashes on, so I would do these for special events. But, when I saw my friends lashes in person, I KNEW I had to try these - especially since they last about 7 days (some have gotten them to last longer!) I like that you can go as DARING as you'd like or even make them look like you just did your eyeliner and mascara. Below are the 2 companies I've tried.
Check out my video on this for before and afters! This was recommended to me by a friend after I met her and complemented her extensions, not realizing she did them herself! I purchased the variety pack and the pack of "shorties" as I knew, based on my friend's recommendation that I wanted the ones that would look most natural for my day-to-day life (these are the ones in the before/after video). My first application took 60 minutes and second and third application took 30 minutes. The glue is supposed to last 7 days, but none of my lashes have lasted past 2 days. However, there is a Facebook group where I've learned some more tips & tricks that I will need to try during my next application. Watch until the end for before/after photos!

My FAVORITE!!! My first try took me 30 minutes and now takes me 10-15 minutes. Their lash glue actually brushes on your lashes (and the base of your lashes) and creates a seal between your lashes and the fake lashes. They are also MUCH lighter than the Flutter Habits, although Flutter Habit has released
their "weightless" series that could compare. Another perk with Lilac St is that they offer a rewards program, so you accrue points for every purchase (plus conducting other actions such as following them on Instagram)
that can be redeemed for free stuff or
$10 up to $20 off your order! Watch until the end for before/after photos! My absolute favorites are the Prism lashes - they are light and not clumpy that give a natural extension look.
