Our Naxos, Greece Itinerary - Our Recommendations
Updated: May 22, 2023
We had a phenomenal 2-week trip to Greece with a focus on the Greek Islands. This was a trip we took 09/2017 and I still get asked about our itinerary! My goal with the itineraries is to provide SHORT overviews and then I will have detailed reports of the activities later
Our entire trip was booked with Asimina Tours and I am SOO amazingly pleased with the job that they did that the following year we tried booking through them for a trip to Italy. Unfortunately, this didn't pan out, but I for sure will use them again.

Bohemian-inspired suites barely 30 feet from the beach! We loved that they had their own spot for sunbeds that were well kept, BUT you do have to get there early if you want the spot along the water! This spot was DEFINITELY quiet which has its benefits but you may have to walk a little extra for other dinner spots

Naxos, Greece Itinerary
Our time in Naxos was open. Our travel agent had recommended getting a car in Naxos, which we got through Moto Naxos and were pretty much open to explore. We asked the hotel for their recommendations and we got a map of great locations. In fact, one of our favorite restaurants came from their recommendations! (see below)

Things to Do for your Greece Itinerary
Temple of Apollo | Portara (The Great Door)
This is a short walk from the Naxos town harbor and a quick stop. We visited the door then walked to the town to to window shop and go to a few restaurants. Visiting Portara can be done without a tour guide, however, access to the door is just open - so if you want a deeper dive into the history, I recommend a guide

Temple of Demeter
This was something we did without a guide and enjoyed! But you can always choose a guide too!

CHORA AND THE CASTLE
It is a medieval monument housing historical monuments such as the Boarding School of Ursulines, School of Commerce founded by Jesuit monks, the KapelaKazatza, a chapel of the Duke, the Catholic Cathedral and the Tower of Krispi or Glezos
WINDSURFING
Naxos is ideal for windsurfing because of the shallow lagoons, gentle blue waves and great wind conditions! The best places to windsurf in Naxos are Laguna, Agios Georgios, AgiosProkopios and Plaka. For the strongest winds, hit the waters in the early afternoon.

Restaurants
The Restaurants We Tried
Matina & Stavros Tavern - Matina Tavern was one of THE coolest dines I've ever had and probably the most beautiful. It's tucked away in this neighborhood and there's no menu, 'cause they cook TRUE farm-to-table. We don't have pics or videos of the food because we were soo distracted by the views around us. Just beautiful.
The Restaurants We Didn't Get to Try
Taverna Apostolis - tucked behind a church in the Old Market district of Naxos Town; easy to spot by keeping your eyes peeled for the mustard-yellow bicycle mounted on the wall next to the courtyard entrance steps. It has a quiet courtyard dining terrace.
Doukato - Reviews mention: crab balls, lemon mousse and salad
Oasis - recommended: stuffed fish
Taverna Avli - situated on the hill at the northwest tip of Agios Prokopios beach. The terraces have terrific views of the entire beach and bay.
O Fotis Tavern - sits between Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna Beach. There are three tree-shaded tables that overlook the beach and sunset. They specialize in grilled meats and fish. Their eggplant dip, bacon-wrapped chicken souvlaki, lamb souvlaki, pork souvlaki and red snapper are highly recommended.
Paradiso Taverna - located at Maragas beach (between Agia Anna and Plaka). Recommend: the stuffed eggplant dishes (papoutsakia) and fried Naxos potatoes
Gorgona Taverna - recommend: Greek salad, spanakopita (spinach pie), roast pork and vegetable dish

Nightlife
For a more relaxed vibe check out a jazz bar or coffee house in the Old Town area of Chora where you can also grab a glass of wine or cocktail. Naxos has many festivals as well, check out the schedule here. For a night out on the town, there are several bars or nightclubs near the waterfront in Town. And if you are staying at a beach resort there are fun cocktail bars at Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka. Mojito beach bar has seafood and mojitos!

Beaches
Agios Prokopios - located west of Naxos - the most desired and beautiful beach on the island (one of the BEST in Europe). Away from the family area there is a small beach a Cape Agios Nikolaos (between Agia Anna and Maragus) which is a nude beach
Agia Anna - joins Agios Prokopios on the southwest. You can lounge on provided sunbeds under the shadow of umbrellas and sip on refreshing cocktails. This is recommended for families and young children
Palaka - located southwest of the island - this is a PRIME area for sea sports (windsurfing and kitesurfing)
Agios Georgios - the best beach for families; right at Naxos town.

Villages
NAXOS TOWN
There is plenty to explore in this village from the authentic structure to beautiful landscape and a great waterfront to stroll by.
HALKI
You can find Venetian towers and Byzantine churches here
KORONOS
On the northeast of the island that is surrounded by an astonishing vineyard valey. It is famous for its high quality wine.
APOLLONAS
A scenic fishing settlement located near the northeastern coast tip of Naxos. There is a beach here or you can hike to the famous Kouros of Apollonos
