We had a phenomenal 2-week trip to Greece with a focus on the Greek Islands. I had been to Athens before, but my husband had not, so we planned this trip to only have a few days in Athens. This was a trip we took 09/2017 and I still get asked about our itinerary! My goal with the itineraries is to provide SHORT overviews and then I will have detailed reports of the activities later
Our entire trip was booked with Asimina Tours and I am SOO amazingly pleased with the job that they did that the following year we tried booking through them for a trip to Italy. Unfortunately, this didn't pan out, but I for sure will use them again.

ITINERARY
Date of Trip: September 2017
Day 1 - Arrive in Athens at 1:50pm
We checked into Athens Gate Hotel and then planned to go to the Acropolis Museum. I knew this would be a good activity while we were trying to get over our jet lag. It was also walking distance from our hotel.
Day 2 - Walking Food Tour and Acropolis Tour

Walking Food Tour through Athens Insiders. This trip was booked through our Travel Agent, so I'm not actually sure the link was to the tour we took. It was absolutely fantastic. I really liked the private tours just 'cause you could recommend to the tour guide what you were most interested in tasting
Our Acropolis Tour was also through Athens Insiders. This was the tour we did. We were so pleased with these private tours
Day 3 - Leave Athens to Mykonos
Travelled to Mykonos, Naxos & Santorini. Blogs on those cities coming soon!
Day 13 - Fly from Santorini to Athens with a 14-hour layover in Athens until our flight back home arrived
I actually realized while we were in Santorini that we had a 14-hour layover, so we booked a cheap hotel on hotels.com, completely last minute and it was TOTALLY worth it just so we had time to nap and hangout at a spot that wasn't the Airport. We stayed at Kiana Akti Hotel. Keep in mind this was a LAYOVER hotel for us, we did not stay overnight. It was pretty tiny, but the location was good and we spent sometime on the beach before heading to the airport. It looks like the restaurant we went to is now closed but there were several restaurants within walking distance

ACROPOLIS MUSEUM
We opted to tour the museum on our own just because of our time in Athens. We only had one full day and this was for the Acropolis and Food Tour. For our personal taste, I think touring the museum at our own pace was fine, but if you want a deeper dive/time into the museum, definitely book the tour!
The restaurant inside the museum is recommended as it offers you a great view of the Parthenon. You do not need to visit the museum in order to visit the restaurant.
SUGGESTED VIEW OF THE ACROPOLIS
View from the Acropolis is recommended from the rooftop terrace bar at the St. George Lycabettus Hotel in Kolonaki
From Syntagma area walk up the steep Pindarou Street until it ends and the hotel will be on your right
Take the elevator (to the left of the reception desk) to the 7th floor
This can be an insanely romantic nighttime view
OUTDOOR CINEMAS
We did not get to these other activities that I researched:
Cine Aegli - tucked inside the lush National Gardens
Cine Paris - located in the Plaka. This theater offers a great view of the Acropolis
Cine Dexameni located in Kolonaki. You walk up a steep hill under the south slope of Mount Lycabettus and you'll enter a courtyard of orange blossoms and honeysuckle. This place offers a full bar and has been rated as one of the best outdoor cinemas

BARS
The Clumsies - a posh "all day bar" has a mojito that comes with edible mint and green apple toothpaste, presented with a toothbrush
Shamone - a chic gay bar. The Eponymous Cocktail is recommended with sour cherry nectar, ginger and mastiha - a unique, silky liqueur made from Chios mastic resin
A MAP OF PLACES
I love using maps when planning my trips in order to see which places would be within walking distance, etc. See our map of places we went here (always easiest to view the map on the desktop)
